“Head and Heart” by Edwin Muir 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 (15 May 18873 Jan 1959)
Our tears have mingled with the rain,
Our cries have vanished on the wind,
Time has carried away our pain.
These are our houses, calm and blind
With permanence of polished stone
That paints indifference on the mind.
Beyond their walls outlawed, alone.
Our muted sorrows*moulder and start,
The lonely tear, the silent groan.
How well they keep themselves apart!
Oh, what we know and what we see
Are separate as head and heart,
And all our sorrow a memory.
