“Pioneers” by Patrick Kavanagh 🇮🇪 (21 Oct 190430 Nov 1967)
They wandered through the dark places and they kept
The prideful passionate horse tight-reined that would have leapt
The fence dividing star from meaner dust,
To trample down the corn which yields all men a crust.
They hungered as they went the sharp-stoned road,
And only one small lamp above them glowed …
I too have eaten of the holy bread,
A crust they spared for me who no name had said.
