“Love Song of Judas Smith” by Peter Viereck 🇺🇸 (5 Aug 191613 May 2006)
Children, be happy while we others wait.
Plant for yourselves; see mirrors lovingly.
Be sweet; be progress; burst with fat.
The worms will thank you. Not he.
Not you will recognize
Him when again he comes.
Only our loveless eyes
Will love without surprise
Him when he comes.
We plant for him alone.
Our wait is wild and calm.
For him, for his great hour, we’ve sown
Vine, hemp, palm.
New palm-leaves for his way
The second time he comes.
And wine for the Supper at close of day.
And hemp for the one of us who’ll betray
Him when he comes.
