“Bread at Midnight” by W. S. Merwin 🇺🇸 (30 Sep 192715 Mar 2019)
The judges have chains in their sleeves
To get where they are they have
Studied many flies
They drag their voices up a long hill
Announcing It is over
Well now that it is over
I remember my homeland the mountains of chaff
And hands hands deaf as starfish fetching
The bread still frozen
To the tables
